Friends of Graphic Design
A student group at Portland State University. Home of Show & Tell lectures, Field Trip Fridays, design workshops & baby unicorns.
Community, Social Media, Experience
Friends of Graphic Design focuses on putting together fun, engaging and informative events for the students. Whether it is by attending a lunchtime talk for our weekly Show and Tell lectures, participating in a skill development workshop, or visiting a local studio through our local Field Trip Friday program, there is no shortage of ways for our students to get involved with Portland's thriving design community. As an officer, I was responsible for all of the social media platforms - Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr as well as coordinating events, and corresponding with all guests when visiting PSU.
Sample of tweets @fogd
We used Twitter actively to update students and the community of events, and to spread our energy across the community near and far.
On and Off Campus Events
Friends of Graphic Design had a presence at all types of design events in the community, such as CreativeMornings, DesignSpeaks, WeMakePDX, AIGA Portland, and GOOD: Ideas for Cities.
FoGD welcomes tons of guest designers and artists for our weekly lecture series, Show and Tell. Some guests also host a workshop alongside their Show and Tell during the same week. How fun!
Mikey Burton's Mark Making Workshop - participant.
Our challenge was to create a portfolio worthy mark by the end of the day. Below is the mark I made for the Boston Sandwich Festival for the duration of this workshop. The results of this workshop were later featured on HOW's Design blog.
Adam Garcia's "Uncharted Territory" Workshop - contributor to the book.
Description From ThePressure.Org:
"This book was created as the byproduct of a day-long workshop at Portland State University that I held in mid-March, 2012. The book ended up becoming a playful collaborative project, based around the theme of "Design for the Future." At the end of the workshop, we created a kind of manifesto, or values to share with the designers of tomorrow, and each of the students took a point and illustrated it as a spread. The spreads were built into an unbound book, along with writings, sketches and other thoughts around this idea. They were packaged in polybags in a limited edition run of 50, numbered and created as a kind of "artifact." See below for a list of the fantastic student contributors."
Be Honest 2012 - social media, design, planning and coordinating event.
BE HONEST is the annual celebration and sharing of PSU.GD student work hosted by FoGD. As students at PSU, we?re lucky to live and learn in a city that supports and encourages our craft. We are continually bowled over by the generosity and enthusiasm of the Portland creative community. Be Honest is a night where we invite the Portland design community to check out what we are thinking and making and to thank them with a night of food, drink and lively conversation. We also invite a nationally recognized designer to talk about their work with the Be Honest audience. Past visiting designers include Jessica Hische and Jennifer Daniel. This year we welcome The Little Friends of Printmaking at Instrument.
